How Long Do Clear Aligners Take? Treatment Times Explained

The honest answer: between 6 and 18 months for most people. Where you fall in that range depends on how much your teeth need to move and how consistently you wear your aligners.

Treatment time by case complexity

Simple cases: 6–9 months

Minor crowding in the front teeth, small gaps, or a single tooth that’s slightly rotated. These cases need less total movement and fewer aligner trays. If you had braces as a teenager and your teeth have shifted slightly since, this is usually where you land.

Moderate cases: 9–14 months

Noticeable crowding in one or both arches, a moderate overbite or overjet, or gaps combined with some rotation. This is the most common category for adults starting aligner treatment for the first time.

Complex cases: 14–18 months

What affects how long treatment takes

How much movement is needed

Wear time compliance

Clear aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours per day. You take them out to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth. That’s it. Every hour below 20 slows your treatment down because the teeth aren’t under consistent pressure.

This is the factor you control. Patients who wear their aligners consistently finish on time or early. Patients who regularly leave them out for extended periods — forgetting them at home, taking them out for social events — end up needing extra trays and extra time.

Your biology

Some people’s teeth move faster than others. Age, bone density, root shape, and individual healing response all play a role. This is why treatment timelines are estimates, not guarantees. The type of movement

Not all tooth movements take the same amount of time. Tipping a tooth (tilting the crown) is relatively fast. Bodily movement (moving the entire tooth including the root) takes longer. What the process looks like week to week

Weeks 1–2: You adjust to wearing the aligners. There’s mild pressure when you switch to a new tray — noticeable but not painful. Most people describe it as a tight feeling that eases after a day or two. You get used to taking them out and putting them back in. Speech might feel slightly different at first.

Weeks 3–12: You settle into a rhythm. New tray every 1–2 weeks (your plan will specify). You start noticing changes in the front teeth first — these move faster and are more visible.
