DVA dental care at Compass Dental Care Darwin

DVA DENTAL CARE

DVA Dentist in Darwin

A veteran dentist who understands your experience. Dr Thien Pham served in the military before dentistry — he knows what years of service do to your dental health. Gold Card and White Card accepted. We bill DVA directly.

What Your DVA Card Covers

Your dental entitlements depend on the type of DVA card you hold. Here is what each covers.

Gold Card

All clinically necessary dental treatment is covered, regardless of whether the condition relates to your military service. This includes:

Key point: Gold Card covers treatment that is clinically necessary — not purely cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening (unless there is a clinical indication).

White Card

Dental treatment for conditions accepted as related to your military service is covered. For example, if you have an accepted dental condition from a service-related injury, treatment for that specific condition is covered at no cost.

Treatment for conditions not related to your accepted conditions is not covered by the White Card — you would use private health insurance or pay out of pocket for those.

Orange Card (SRCA/DRCA)

Coverage depends on your specific accepted conditions under the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act. Contact DVA or speak to us at our Darwin clinic to clarify what is covered under your card.

DVA Dental Fee Schedules Explained

DVA dental treatment is organised into three schedules. Understanding which schedule your treatment falls under helps you know whether prior approval is needed.

Schedule A — Routine Care

Check-ups, X-rays, cleans, fillings, simple extractions, and preventive care.

Prior approval: Generally not required for Gold or White Card holders.
Monetary limit: None.

Schedule B — Restorative & Prosthetic

More complex restorative and prosthetic items including dentures and other prosthetics.

Prior approval: Required for all card holders.
Monetary limit: None.

Schedule C — High-Cost Treatment

Crowns, bridges, veneers, implants, and extensive rehabilitation.

Prior approval: May not be required for Gold Card holders, but subject to the Assessed Monetary Limit.
Biennial limit: $5,980.30 (1 Jan 2026 — 31 Dec 2027).

We handle all the DVA paperwork and prior approval applications for you. You do not need to navigate the schedule system yourself — just tell us what is bothering you and we will take care of the rest from our Parap clinic.

Why Veterans Choose Compass Dental

A Dentist Who Has Served

Dr Thien Pham is an ex-military veteran. He holds a BDSc from the University of Melbourne and postgraduate qualifications in sedation and pain control, and oral surgery. When a veteran sits in his chair, he does not need anything explained. He knows what deployment, stress, and years of deferred care look like clinically — and he handles it without judgement.

No Judgment — Ever

Many veterans have avoided the dentist for years due to anxiety, cost uncertainty, PTSD, or simply because life got in the way during service. We understand, and we will never lecture you. We will assess what needs doing, prioritise the most important issues, and work through everything at your pace.

PTSD & Dental Anxiety Support

For veterans with PTSD or dental anxiety, we offer happy gas (nitrous oxide) to make treatment comfortable — you stay conscious but relaxed, and the effects wear off in minutes. Dr Pham also offers IV sedation for patients who need deeper relief. We take a gentle, communicative approach throughout.

DVA Billing Expertise

We handle DVA paperwork and billing directly from our Parap clinic. You do not need to pay upfront and claim back — we bill DVA for you. For complex treatment requiring prior approval, we prepare and submit the application on your behalf.

Defence Health Fund Accepted

In addition to DVA cards, we also accept Defence Health — the private health fund for ADF members and their families. We process claims on the spot with HICAPS so you only pay the gap, if any.

Darwin’s Military Community

Darwin has one of the largest defence populations in Australia. Robertson Barracks, RAAF Base Darwin, Larrakeyah Barracks — we are located centrally in Parap, a short drive from all major bases. Our Saturday morning hours also make it easy to fit in dental visits around service commitments.

Where to Find Us

Compass Dental Care is at Suite 102/12 Salonika St, Parap — 2.5 km from Darwin CBD with free parking. We see DVA patients from across greater Darwin including Stuart Park, Fannie Bay, Larrakeyah, The Gardens, Winnellie, Nightcliff, Casuarina, Palmerston, and regional NT communities.

Frequently Asked Questions — DVA Dental Care

Common questions from Darwin veterans about DVA dental entitlements.

Does Compass Dental accept DVA?

Yes. Compass Dental Care is a DVA-registered dental practice in Darwin. We accept both Gold Card and White Card holders and bill DVA directly — there is no out-of-pocket cost for covered treatment. No referral needed. Just bring your DVA card to our Parap clinic.

What dental treatment does DVA cover?

For Gold Card holders, DVA covers all clinically necessary dental treatment including check-ups, X-rays, cleans, fillings, root canals, extractions, crowns, bridges, dentures, dental implants (with prior approval), and emergency care. White Card holders are covered for dental treatment related to accepted service conditions.

Do I need a referral to see a DVA dentist?

No. You do not need a referral from your GP, DVA, or anyone else. You can book directly with us at our Parap clinic. Just bring your DVA card to your appointment.

Does DVA cover dental implants?

Yes, with prior approval. Dental implants fall under Schedule C and are subject to the biennial Assessed Monetary Limit ($5,980.30 for 2026–2027). We submit the treatment plan and clinical justification to DVA on your behalf. Implants are generally approved when there is a clear clinical benefit over alternatives like dentures.

Will I have to pay anything out of pocket?

For Gold Card holders receiving clinically necessary treatment — no. DVA covers the full cost and we bill DVA directly from our Darwin practice. For White Card holders, treatment related to your accepted service conditions is fully covered. Treatment outside accepted conditions would be at your own cost or through private health insurance.

What is the difference between Gold Card and White Card?

A Gold Card covers all clinically necessary dental treatment for all conditions — no need to prove a service connection. A White Card covers dental treatment only for conditions accepted by DVA as related to your military service. If you hold a White Card and need treatment for a non-accepted condition, that would be at your own cost.

I have been avoiding the dentist for years — is that a problem?

Not at all. Dr Pham is himself a veteran — he understands. We regularly see patients who have not been to the dentist in 5, 10, even 15 years. We will do a thorough assessment, prioritise the most important issues, and work through everything at a pace that is comfortable for you. No rush, no pressure, no judgement.
