What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental problem needs urgent care — but some absolutely do. If you’re experiencing any of the following, call us immediately. The sooner you’re seen, the better the outcome.

Severe Toothache

Intense, throbbing pain that won’t go away usually signals an infection, abscess, or nerve damage. Over-the-counter painkillers may dull it temporarily, but the underlying cause needs professional treatment.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A completely knocked-out adult tooth can often be saved if you get to us within 30–60 minutes. Handle it by the crown, keep it moist in milk, and call us immediately on your way.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

Whether from biting something hard, an accident, or a sporting injury — a broken tooth needs prompt attention to prevent infection and preserve as much of the tooth as possible.

Dental Abscess

A painful, swollen lump on your gum is a sign of bacterial infection. Abscesses don’t resolve on their own and can spread to other areas of the body if left untreated. This needs urgent drainage and antibiotics.

Lost Filling or Crown

A missing filling or crown exposes the vulnerable inner tooth to bacteria and further damage. Keep the area clean, avoid chewing on that side, and bring the crown with you if you still have it.

Uncontrolled Bleeding

Bleeding that doesn’t stop after an extraction, injury, or spontaneously from the gums. Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze and call us. If bleeding is severe, go to Royal Darwin Hospital ED.

What to Do Before You Get to Us

While you’re on your way to our practice — or waiting for your appointment — these steps can help manage pain and protect the affected area.

For Pain

Take ibuprofen (Nurofen) as directed — it reduces both pain and inflammation. Avoid aspirin directly on gums as it causes chemical burns. Rinse gently with warm salt water (half a teaspoon in a glass of water).

For Swelling

Apply a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your cheek — 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. This helps reduce swelling and numb the area.

For a Knocked-Out Tooth

Handle by the crown only. Rinse gently with milk (not water). Try to reinsert it into the socket. If you can’t, keep it in milk or inside your cheek. Get to us within 30–60 minutes.

Same-Day Priority Appointments

We reserve emergency slots every day so we can see you when it matters most. Call us as early as possible and we’ll rearrange our schedule to fit you in — most emergency patients are seen within a few hours.

Our practice has in-house surgical capability, so we can handle most emergencies on the spot — extractions, root canals, abscess drainage, crown re-cementing — without referring you elsewhere.

Emergency Dental FAQs

What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part you can see in your mouth) — never touch the root. Gently rinse it with milk or saline if it’s dirty, but don’t scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket if you can. If not, keep it moist in milk, saline, or tucked inside your cheek. Time is critical — get to our practice within 30 to 60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth. Call us on (08) 8995 9530 on your way.

Does Compass Dental do emergency appointments?

Yes. We reserve emergency appointment slots every day, Monday to Friday 9am–5pm and Saturday mornings 8:30am–12:30pm. Call us as early as possible and we’ll fit you in — most emergency patients are seen within a few hours of calling.

How much does an emergency dental visit cost?

An emergency consultation starts from around $80. The total cost depends on the treatment required — we’ll explain everything and give you a clear estimate before proceeding. We process health fund claims on the spot with HICAPS, so you only pay the gap. No surprises.

What if I have a dental emergency after hours?

Call our main number on (08) 8995 9530 — our AI assistant can help you find the next available appointment or notify the team on your behalf. For pain management while you wait, take over-the-counter ibuprofen, rinse with warm salt water, and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. For life-threatening emergencies (difficulty breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, severe facial swelling), go directly to Royal Darwin Hospital Emergency Department.
