Clear Aligners for Adults — You’re Not Too Old to Straighten Your Teeth

Around half the clear aligner patients we treat at Compass Dental Care are adults over 30. Some are in their 40s, 50s, or 60s. The oldest patient we’ve straightened teeth for was well past retirement age.

There’s no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. If your teeth and gums are healthy, your teeth can be moved — at any age.

Why adults are choosing aligners now

Most adults who come in for a clear aligner consultation aren’t doing it on a whim. They’ve been thinking about it for years. Usually it’s one of a few situations:

Teeth that were straight but shifted. You had braces as a teenager, stopped wearing your retainer, and now your lower front teeth are crowding again. This is the most common scenario — and the most frustrating, because you already went through treatment once.

Teeth you’ve always been self-conscious about. A gap, an overlap, a tooth that sits forward — something you’ve noticed in every photo for decades. At some point you decided it was too late or too expensive. It’s usually neither.

A dental event that changed your perspective. A crown, a bridge, a missing tooth. When you’re already investing in dental work, straightening the surrounding teeth often makes the overall result better and longer-lasting.

Professional or personal motivation. A career change, a milestone birthday, a relationship. Something shifts and you decide it’s time to stop putting it off.

What’s different about orthodontics for adults

Adult orthodontics is clinically different from teenage orthodontics in a few ways, and your dentist should account for these:

Bone density

Adult bone is denser and remodels more slowly than adolescent bone. This means tooth movement happens at a slightly slower pace — but it also means the results can be very stable once you get there. Treatment times are typically 6 to 18 months depending on complexity.

Gum health

Adults are more likely to have some history of gum disease, recession, or bone loss. This doesn’t rule out orthodontic treatment, but it needs to be addressed first. Moving teeth through unhealthy gum tissue is a bad idea. At Compass Dental, we’ll treat any gum issues before starting aligners — and we monitor your gum health throughout treatment.

Existing dental work

Crowns, bridges, implants, and large fillings are common in adult patients. Clear aligners can work around most existing dental work. Implants don’t move (they’re fused to bone), so treatment is planned with them as fixed anchor points. Crowns and bridges may need minor adjustments to attachments, but this is routine.

Wear patterns

Decades of use leave their mark — worn edges, chips, uneven tooth lengths. Aligner treatment can address the alignment, and if needed, cosmetic bonding or reshaping can refine the edges after straightening. Some patients combine aligner treatment with a cosmetic plan for a more complete result.

Why clear aligners instead of braces

For most adults, the answer is straightforward: visibility and convenience.

Metal brackets on your teeth at 45 affect professional interactions in a way they don’t at 15. Clear aligners are nearly invisible — especially Spark aligners, which use a material called TruGEN that’s clearer and more stain-resistant than older aligner plastics.

Beyond aesthetics, aligners are removable. You eat normally, brush normally, and floss without threading around wires. For adults with existing dental work — crowns, bridges, veneers — this matters. Brackets bonded onto restored teeth can damage the restoration when removed.

Common concerns

”My teeth are too crowded for aligners”

Probably not. Clear aligners treat mild to severe crowding effectively. If your case involves significant skeletal jaw discrepancy (not just tooth position), Dr Pham will tell you honestly if aligners are the right approach or if you need a specialist referral.

”It’ll take too long”

Most adult cases take 6 to 18 months. Simple cases — mild crowding, minor spacing — can be done in under 9 months. You’ll know the estimated timeline before you commit.

”I already had braces and they shifted back”

What happens at the consultation

The first appointment is straightforward. Dr Thien Pham will:

2. Take digital scans (no gooey impressions — a handheld scanner)
3. Discuss what’s realistic, what it would cost, and how long it would take
4. Give you an honest assessment of whether clear aligners are the right approach for your situation
