Spark Clear Aligners vs Invisalign — What’s Actually Different?

Both systems work the same way

Before getting into the differences, the fundamentals are identical. Both Spark and Invisalign use a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays to gradually move your teeth. Both require 20–22 hours of daily wear. Both use digital scanning and computer-planned tooth movements. Both treat mild crowding through to more complex bite correction.

The difference is in the material, the finish, and what’s included in your treatment.

The material: TruGEN vs SmartTrack

Invisalign aligners are made from a material called SmartTrack. It was a significant improvement over earlier aligner plastics when it launched.

Spark aligners are made from TruGEN — a newer-generation thermoplastic that was developed specifically to address the limitations of earlier materials. In independent testing, TruGEN is clearer than SmartTrack and significantly more stain-resistant. That means your aligners stay virtually invisible even after eating curry, drinking coffee, or having a turmeric latte — all common culprits in Darwin.

If you’ve ever seen someone with yellowed or cloudy aligners partway through their treatment, that’s a material problem TruGEN was designed to solve.

Edge finish and comfort

One of the most common complaints with any aligner system is irritation along the gumline and inside the cheeks, especially in the first few days of a new tray.

Spark aligners are trimmed and polished along the edges during manufacturing — a scalloped, smooth finish that sits closer to the gumline without cutting into soft tissue. Patients switching from older aligner systems to Spark consistently report that the trays feel gentler in the mouth.

Five years of unlimited aligners — included

This is the part most people don’t hear about until they sit down for a consultation, and it’s the single biggest reason we chose Spark.

That means if your teeth shift after your initial treatment — which can happen, especially if you don’t wear your retainer consistently — you’re covered. New aligners, no additional cost, for five full years.

Relapse is a normal part of orthodontics. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their original position, particularly in the first 12–18 months after treatment finishes. Most aligner providers charge for refinement trays or a second round of treatment. With Spark at Compass Dental, it’s already included.

In-house aligner fabrication for ongoing care

Beyond the five-year window, we can still look after you. Compass Dental Care has the capability to fabricate aligners in-house for minor corrections — small movements that don’t require a full new treatment plan.

This ongoing support is available to patients who maintain their regular six-monthly check-ups and cleans as recommended by Dr Pham. It means that a small amount of crowding that creeps back years after treatment doesn’t have to turn into a full orthodontic case again. We catch it early and correct it in-house.

What about cost?

Spark Clear Aligner treatment at Compass Dental Care starts from $4,500 for a single arch (upper or lower) and $8,500–$9,700 for both arches. That includes your initial consultation, digital scans and records, all aligner trays throughout treatment, progress reviews, and the five years of unlimited aligners.

We process health fund orthodontic claims on the spot with HICAPS, so you only pay the gap. Zip Pay and Zip Money payment plans are also available to spread the cost.

Invisalign pricing in Australia is broadly similar — typically $6,000 to $9,000 for comprehensive treatment — but check carefully what’s included. Refinement trays, retainers, and additional appointments are sometimes quoted separately.

So why doesn’t Compass Dental offer Invisalign?

We’re not anti-Invisalign. It’s a good system that’s helped millions of people straighten their teeth. But when we compared the two side by side — material clarity, stain resistance, edge comfort, and especially the five-year unlimited coverage — Spark was the better offer for our patients.
