Special Needs Dentistry

Compass Dental welcomes patients with additional needs. We adapt our approach to ensure comfortable, gentle dental care for everyone.

What You Need to Know

We believe everyone deserves access to quality dental care, regardless of ability. Our practice is wheelchair accessible, and our team is experienced in adapting our approach to meet the needs of patients with intellectual disabilities, complex medical conditions, and anxiety disorders.

Why Patients Choose Us

Wheelchair Accessible

Our practice is fully accessible with ground-level entry and wide treatment rooms to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids.

Adapted Approach

We tailor our communication style, appointment length, and treatment approach to each patient’s individual needs and comfort level.

Sedation Options

Happy gas (nitrous oxide) can help patients who find dental treatment stressful. It’s gentle, safe, and wears off quickly after the appointment.

Common Questions About Special Needs Dentistry

What does special needs dentistry include?

We provide tailored dental care for patients with physical, intellectual, sensory, or medical conditions that make standard dental visits challenging. This includes modified techniques, longer appointments, and sedation options.

How do you make patients with disabilities comfortable?

We take time to understand each patient’s needs, communicate in the way that works best for them, allow extra time, reduce sensory stimulation when needed, and involve carers in the process.

Do you offer wheelchair-accessible facilities?

Yes — our practice is fully wheelchair accessible. Our dental chairs and facilities are designed to accommodate patients with mobility needs.

Can you treat patients with autism?

Yes. We use desensitisation techniques, visual schedules, quiet appointment times, and a patient, predictable approach. We work with families to find what works best for each individual.

Is sedation available for special needs patients?

Yes — we offer happy gas (nitrous oxide) in-chair to help patients relax. For patients who need deeper sedation, we can arrange a referral for IV sedation or general anaesthetic. We’ll recommend the most appropriate option based on the patient’s needs and the treatment required.

Can carers stay during the appointment?

Absolutely. We encourage carers, parents, and support workers to be present if it helps the patient feel comfortable. There’s room beside the dental chair for support people.

Do you treat NDIS participants?

Yes — some dental treatments may be covered under NDIS plans. We can help you navigate what’s included and provide the documentation needed for NDIS claims.

How do I prepare a special needs patient for a dental visit?

We recommend visiting the practice beforehand for a familiarisation visit. We can send social stories or visual guides. Let us know about specific triggers, communication preferences, and what works at other medical appointments.

What if the patient can’t cooperate for treatment?

We have multiple options including desensitisation over several visits and happy gas. For patients who need more, we can arrange a referral for IV sedation or general anaesthetic. We never force treatment — finding the right approach for each patient is essential.

Do you treat patients with complex medical conditions?

Yes — Dr Pham has experience treating patients with medical conditions that affect dental care, including bleeding disorders, heart conditions, immunosuppression, and more. We liaise with your medical team as needed.
